What is a Friction Shaft (Differential Shaft)?
A friction shaft (differential shaft) is the core functional component of high-precision slitting and rewinding machines, specially engineered for multi-roll synchronous winding operations. Unlike standard airshafts that only provide uniform clamping for roll cores, it delivers independent, adjustable slip torque to each individual friction ring on the shaft body. This unique design compensates for line speed differences caused by material thickness tolerance, slitting width variation and roll diameter inconsistency during winding, ensuring constant and uniform tension across every single finished roll. It effectively eliminates common winding defects such as material stretching, wrinkling, telescoping and loose winding, and is an indispensable core part for high-end slitting and winding production.
Core Working Principle
Our friction shafts (differential shafts) rely on pneumatic pressure (or mechanical structure) to precisely control the friction torque of each independent slip ring. When the winding diameter of each roll changes during high-speed production, the friction rings generate corresponding differential slip to automatically compensate for the linear speed difference between rolls. This ensures that the surface tension of each material roll remains consistent and stable throughout the entire winding process, from the initial core winding to the final full roll completion, guaranteeing uniform and high-quality finished products.
